Why is my card payment not going through?

There are many reasons why a card payment might fail, but below we’ve listed the most common ones and how each of them can be resolved:

  • Incorrect card information entered – this can include card number, cardholder name, expiry date or the CVC code from the back of the card. Make sure you’ve entered the correct details;
  • 3D Secure fail – this is an additional layer of card protection, a form of two factor verification of a payment. Failing this check will always cause a transaction to fail. This check is mandatory for European payment gateways and all cards issued by European banks must support it. For clients outside of Europe, especially in the USA, your card may or may not support 3D Secure two factor authentication. Often it does, but it’s not been actually set up (i.e. send you a code via SMS, WhatsApp or your bank’s app). This may lead the payment gateway to initiate a 3D Secure check which will then fail because the payment cannot actually be verified. Please contact your bank for assistance;
  • Payment is falsely flagged as fraudulent – this is one of the most common problems when paying at an e-store. Bank systems try to automatically detect card fraud, but since the criteria are arbitrary and automated, it often causes them to flag and block legitimate payments. Please contact your bank for assistance;
  • International payment blocked – this problem is typical for US and Canadian customers. A lot of North American banks will block or limit international payments by default, as an anti-fraud measure. We process cards through an European payment platform, which may cause the transfer to be flagged as international and be blocked. Please contact your bank for assistance;
  • Insufficient funds / card limit reached – both credit and debit cards have the base available funds limit. If you do not have enough money on your card, it will cause the payment to automatically fail. Additional limitations that your card might have are daily, weekly or monthly limits, as well as number of daily transactions. Please note that multiple consecutive payments in a short period of time might also cause a false fraudulent flagging of the payment. To check your cards limits use your bank’s web or mobile app or contact them directly;
